March 2008

The boys are doing great with their sleeping. Yay!

I started drinking Mother's Milk tea today - another supplement to hopefully increase my supply. It doesn’t taste as bad as everyone was saying it would. I stopped multi-tasking when I pump. Starting today, I listen to Joshua nursing (recorded a couple months ago) while smelling a piece of his clothing and picturing him nursing.

I also tried adjusting the suction and speed of my breast pump when the let-down starts and got close to 5 oz. in the afternoon sessions which is the most yet!

Chad tried a Size 3 nipple on Joshua's bottles this afternoon. He said it looked like Joshua's cheeks were going to implode because he was sucking so hard to get the milk out of the Size 2 nipples! We only had one left from Noah, so I bought a couple more on the way home tonight. Our boy keeps growing fast and furiously!

During Joshua's last nursing session, I'll change his diaper one last time. He's gotten into a habit of stretching out his arms and grabbing the side rails of his changing table. He looks too cute like that and it takes a bit of effort to pry his fingers off.

After nursing him, he's almost always out cold. He looks so cute as I carry him to his crib - he's so relaxed. His eyes are closed, his arms are dangling down at his sides - he's so content.

Thought of more stuff Noah understands:
    Hold Mommy’s hand / hold Daddy’s hand
    Brush teeth
    Be gentle
    Turn the page
Can point to angels, stars, dogs, birds, ducks
    Cheese (signs)
    Wash hands (signs)

Noah has discovered himself. He found it a while ago. But recently during bath time, he will look down, touch it and “poke” it will his toy. He’ll feel for it, too, while when we’re changing his diaper.

To get some advice on how to increase my milk supply, I called Nancy again with LaLecheLeague. She’s so sweet and helpful. I started increasing my fenugreek to the max dosage of 4, plus continuing with 3 blessed thistle capsules 3x/day. I've been eating 2 servings of oatmeal as a mid-morning snack ever since I noticed the decrease, too. I hope it will all slowly help me get my supply up. I need to remember to try the Isis hand pump.

Chad worked all weekend, so the boys & I went to Mama & Papa’s to spend the weekend. It was extra fun because the Garcias drove Brielle down, so it was a full house. Julia & Brielle love playing with Noah, so he got lots of attention this weekend. Natashia finally got Noah to “like” her again – she bribed him with food! :) He hasn’t let Natashia hold him ever since babysitting him during our Small Group because she had to keep him away from us. Now, she can carry him whenever she wants and they’re BFF!

Joshua has found his fingers. He’s probably starting to teeth ‘cause he’s starting to drool a little, too.

Noah has started to make sounds when he plays with his cars. He’s such a boy!

I’m finally done playing catch up on this site and finished uploading all my journal entries, so now I just have to maintain it. Good luck to me. ;) That means I have to start catching up on my other project - the our family photo books. I have to finish 2007 first, then get started on 2008!

I was short about 2-oz of milk for Joshua’s bottles tomorrow. I’m starting to get desperate, so I drank a whole BEER – well, almost a whole one. I read that the yeast may help increase your supply, so I thought I’d give it a try. Chad was so excited to drink with me. He was so funny and wanted me to chug it, but I couldn’t. It wasn’t bad, but I’m just not into beer. I’ll do it for my baby though if it helps. I hope it does!

Yay, I forgot I had some leftover milk from pumping yesterday, so I don’t have to stay up late tonight to pump more. Thank goodness, because I was already falling asleep nursing Joshua. It may have been the beer though.

We took Joshua’s 4-month pictures on the Nemo pillow. I can’t believe how big he is. I’m anxious for his check-up next week to see how much he weighs!

    Comments:
traci:  Keeping the supply around this time is SO HARD! I feel your pain, sister! I am so proud of you!!!
Stephanie:  Yeah for the beer!!!! LOL! I did the same thing....I also used to make oatmeal cookies obsessantly....I think I just wanted the cookies! ;-)
    Good luck!

Joshua is 4-months old today! He’s such a good sleeper now. Even his naps are good and long now – no more cat naps. Plus, he rarely fusses when we put him down. He’s smiling so much and has the cutest laugh. Chad is really good at getting him to giggle. We put him in the exersaucer for the first time today. We had to roll up a towel so he wouldn’t slump over to any one side.

Chad got home in time for breakfast, then we all went shopping at CostCo. Chad continued working on our back wall. He knocked a few bricks off the top with a sledgehammer until he can rent the proper saw.

After our small group, I finished a photo book for Chad. It's a surprise present (I don't think he reads my nonsense on this site) with pictures of him and the boys to keep at work. I think he'll like it 'cause he's mentioned to me that he needs new pictures of the boys at work.

Chad started coughing last night, but hopefully he isn’t coming down with anything.

I got a video of Noah “talking”, but couldn’t remember everything at that moment of course. So, here’s a list and I’ll try to get another video with him doing all of these!

    Says:
    Wow
    Bird
    Hi
    Hot
    Daddy
    Mama
    Ah
    Baby
    Light

    Signs:
    Fan
    Bye
    Mommy
    Water
    Sleep
    More
    Please
    Thank you
    Eat
    Sleep
    Milk
    All done
    Potty
    (working on: daddy, apple, cheese…)

Understands/Does (when he feels like it):
    Sit down
    Drink your milk
    Kiss
    Hug
    Sit in your chair
    Clap your hands
    Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes
    Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
    Itsy Bitsy Spider
    Use the remote controls
    Use the cell phone

    Favorite toys:
Circle & oval shapes in the Shape-O toy (he always grabs those 2 first)
    Stacking buckets (quoits?)

"Noah's tree" is gone. The workers mowed everything down on the hill behind our house. It looked like they were going to leave it planted there because they had cleared all the brush around it and left it standing. But today I noticed that it was all gone. I guess it's a good thing that it wasn't thriving because we would have been very sad that it was thrown away with the rest of the brush.

    Comments:
traci:  He is so smart! Wow, I am so glad you listed everything out. Now I can try to get him to do this stuff at Bible Study! =)

I am SO SAD they took his tree away. What a waste of your time, money and energy! BOO!

I used the battery pack for my breast pump (glad I remembered I had one!), so I was able to pump on the drive to work today. Yay! It worked great! This will be the new process now.

Chad went to see our tax lady today to finish up our taxes and we’re getting money back. Woo hoo!!! That’s always better than having to pay!

My milk production is still dipping. I didn’t pump enough at work again today. So, I’ll have to stay up later to pump again after Joshua’s last feeding.

Happy Easter, everyone! He is risen!

Chad had to work. So, I took the boys up to my parents’. We had brunch and then watched the movie on Enchanted on DVD. I forgot Joshua’s kick ‘n play - drat. He didn’t nap very well at all. I tried taking some pictures of Joshua with the Nikon. I really need to learn that camera. I got a couple good ones, but they were still “soft”.

When it got a little cooler outside, we had a little Easter egg "hunt" for Noah. It was really just us throwing some eggs around the ground and him picking them up and putting them in the basket. He had fun. After dinner, I packed the boys up again and we headed home for the night. I gave Noah a bath and finished up some tax stuff.

Noah had another tough night. At 10:30 pm, he woke up screaming and crying. I’m sure it was another bad dream. He sounded so scared that I went into his room and rubbed his head for a little bit before leaving again. I thought he would have gotten up and wanted me to hold him, but he just laid there and cried. It was so sad. :(

Joshua’s been doing this funny thing when he nurses. He’ll be lying completely on his side, but he’ll turn his head 90 degrees up toward the ceiling and just look at me. I try to turn his head back toward my boob so he can eat, but he’s strong and fights me. It makes me laugh how he won’t budge. I eventually can move his head in the right position, but it’s definitely a struggle. He’s also biting a lot more, too. I think it’s because he’s not getting enough milk from me and he gets bored. I try to keep him latched though, so that I can produce more.

Every once is a while, he’ll still make a funny face when he first latches. And sometimes, he’ll gag, too. Yeah, that makes me feel good. Do I taste like crap or what? ;)

Daddy’s home! Chad made breakfast and then pruned and weeded the backyard. It looks great. I think he was inspired by the workers who were cutting down some trees around the water tower. They cleared out all the brush in the area and completely left our “experiment” (previously known as “Noah’s tree”) untouched. Chad suggested we don’t call it “Noah’s tree” anymore since it didn’t do very well. It looks so funny standing there with nothing else around it. There are no leaves left on it either. I wonder what they thought when they saw that tree planted in the middle of “nowhere”.

Chad was working hard and had to stop before he was done to go to the 2:30 service at church with the Banisters. It was our first time bringing Joshua to the nursery (and the first time anyone but family has watch him) and he did great they said. :) Afterwards, we had plans to get frozen yogurt (there's a new place that I wanted to try), but Traci & Donnie hadn't eaten, so we had dinner at Claim Jumper instead. I haven't been there in ages. They are really kid-friendly, too – crayons, coloring menu, table topper placemats. Very cool!

The boys had a rough night last night. Noah woke up just after 1 am crying. It sounded like it may have been a bad dream. After a few moments, he was asleep again. Joshua woke up just after 2 am, then around 5 am, then around 6:30 am. Thankfully, he went back to sleep after a minute or so each time. Chad said he slept kinda restlessly, too. And when I woke up hearing Noah, I couldn’t fall back to sleep for a while because my back was sore. I was tempted to go downstairs and sit in the massage chair. But I was too tired to get up and it was cold.

Joshua’s getting 6 oz. of milk now at each feeding. We’ll see if he finishes them all. That much milk barely fits in his little bottles, so we’ll have to move on the big bottle now. My baby is growing up so fast!

I didn’t pump enough milk for Joshua yesterday, so I had to pull from some extra out from the freezer stash. I realized that I’ve only been pumping 3x at work, plus nursing Joshua once before his bedtime. That’s only 4x a day which is not enough to keep my milk supply up, no matter how many supplements I take. So, this morning, I planned to squeeze in another pumping session during my drive to work. But the cigarette lighter adapter in my car wasn't working, so I couldn’t. Darn. I’ll have to to try and get 4 pumping sessions done at work.

I called one of the LLL (La Leche League) contacts, Nancy, about how much Blessed Thistle to take along with the Fenugreek. I’m hoping taking both with jump start my milk supply. My supply is starting to dwindle and Joshua’s now up to 5-1/2 oz. at each feeding. I didn’t pump enough milk him yesterday to cover his feedings tomorrow. Nancy was very nice and gave me a bunch of tips. Starting today, I’m taking 3 capsules of Fenugreek plus 3 capsules of Blessed Thistle 3x a day. That’s a lot of pills! I hope to see results in a few days.

Daddy went to work today, so Mom & the boys went to play at Disney’s California Adventure. It was such a gorgeous day – it was a bit cool in the shade, but perfectly warm in the sun. We met Vivian for lunch (at Boudin Bakery – yum!) and then went to “a bug’s land” to let Noah play in the water. He wasn’t sure what was going on at first. But he watched the other kids for a few moments and then was totally into it. On the videos, you can see him get more and more adventurous. He was the youngest kid there. I need to bring my camcorder next time so I can take video of Noah having fun the entire time. I kept running out of memory space on my camera and wanted to take so much more video. He was too cute playing in the water and was getting so excited. He was screaming with joy. At one point, he was even signing “more” and “please” – his favorite signs when he likes something. He’s such a kick!

Afterwards, we walked across the esplanade to Disneyland and some work friends came out to meet the boys – June, Sandy, Shelley and Patti. It was a really fun day.

Noah’s eczema is getting worse and worse. Chad thinks the itchiness is why he gets so cranky and needy sometimes. He’s probably right. I try to keep his nails short, but he still manages to break the skin and so he’s got scabs all over his legs and butt right now. We’ve been lubing him up with Aquafor and using this anti-itch cream called Sarna that worked for the Haan’s. Neither seem to be working for Noah. I finally called his ped to ask what we can do next.

Joshua’s first official day with 5-1/2 oz. at each feeding...we’ll see if he finishes them all.

Apparently Joshua was really hungry today. Gammie gave him extra milk after his “normal” 5 oz. So, he drank another ounce or so. He hasn’t been consistent though. Tonight, I got to feed Joshua a bottle for the first time. Chad said he didn’t want to finish his dinner, so I got to try when I got home. Chad’s so good about trying to get Joshua to finish all his bottles so as to not waste my breast milk, or “liquid gold” as he calls it. :) Joshua finished his bottle for me! Yay, Joshua!

We went to Vegas this past weekend to celebrate Easter with our family out there.
This is our annual Easter celebration that we always look forward to and start planning for the following year as soon as it’s over.

First we wear silly Easter hats and do an Easter parade around the backyard to the Olympics theme. We even pass a torch. Then there's the opening ceremonies where the "parents" do a "cheer" and then the "kids" do a "cheer". As you can see by the videos, the "cheers" have evolved into full skits/dance numbers. And then each group makes up silly games for the other group to do. It's our "Egg-lympics"! It's a whole day of fun, as usual.

This year, the parents’ cheer was a Cowby/American Idol medley and the kids did one to “I Will Follow Him” a la the movie Sister Act. For the first time, we skipped the games! Shocking! I think it was because we had a lot of late guests arrive and then everyone was eating (again) and then we watched the videos of the day up to the cheers and then by the time all that was over, everyone was tired. :( Oh well, we’ll have to make up for it next year.

Joshua did pretty well traveling. Noah normally does, too. We bought a 3-disc CD set of “100 Bible Stories and 100 Bible Songs”. Most of the songs match up really well to the stories. But some of them not so much and it’s kinda funny. It’s also funny how they change the lyrics to some well-known kid songs and make them Bible friendly. The one that comes to mind is the “Bingo” song...you know “B-I-N-G-O and Bingo was his name-o”. Well, they do that with Jesus. Yep, exactly how you guess it goes, that’s how it goes.

Noah did get fussy at one point of the trip and so we put in a DVD. It was his first time watching one in the car and we purposely waited until we thought was HAD to play it. (If he liked it, we envisioned him doing the “please” and “more” signs over and over again whenever we got in the car! Haha!) We brought Toy Story for him to watch. He was so funny because he got this blank stare look as the movie started. He didn’t know what was going on and was soon watching with his mouth open.

And, even though, we couldn’t see the screen, Chad & I still chuckled at the audio track. There are some funny lines in that movie and you realize how much emotion is conveyed just through the voices.

Since Joshua eats every 3 hours, we knew we had to stop halfway there so I could nurse him. So, we stopped at Barstow and we all had lunch. We went to Baja Fresh - yum. It was a nice break in the long trip for all of us.

It was our first time having to sleep in the same room all together. The boys have their own rooms at home, so it was their first time having to sleep with each other, too, not to mention mom & dad. It went pretty well. Joshua had been sleeping through the night, so we held our breath that he would continue to do so, even in a different environment. Friday night went great, but, on Saturday night, Joshua had a tough time settling. We kept to our usual routine and let him cry it out and try to soothe himself back to sleep. I was so afraid that Noah would wake up from all that loud crying, but he didn’t even flinch. Noah slept through the whole thing!

In the morning, it was very cute because we could hear Noah get up and start moving around his crib. We were tucked under the covers, so as soon as Chad popped his head out, Noah would see him and yell his usual excited “ooooh!” and start laughing. There was no getting him back to sleep after that.

It was the 3rd night and counting of Joshua sleeping through the night! Joshua has been doing great with the 5 feedings and 1 "dream feed". Today, we officially moved to Size 2 nipples for his bottles. Chad tried the new size on him yesterday and Joshua did great with them.

Oh my goodness, Joshua slept through the night last night! He didn’t even get up to cry in the middle of the night!

But...Noah woke up. It was about 6:30 am and he started crying. He stopped after a few moments, but how strange. I wonder if it was a bad dream.

After coming home from work, the boys and I had a great night. They were really playful and full of smiles and laughs. Noah in particular was in a great mood and wanted my attention and didn’t scream or whine or fuss to get it. He was patient when I was busy with Joshua or in the middle of doing the dishes. I hope this continues!

I put Joshua down in his bassinette for another nap before his night feeding. Gammie said he did well in it for his nap today. He fussed for just a minute before falling to sleep. Yay, Joshua! I’m glad he’s able to sleep in different places.

Joshua has grown so much and is already too big for his swaddler. So, we started putting Joshua to sleep without swaddling a week or so ago. I was hoping the swaddling would help him “know” that it was night time and that it was time to sleep, and sleep all night! (We keep his arms free during the day, for play and nap time.) Well, he wasn’t sleeping through the night. So, we stopped swaddling and I held my breath hoping he’d sleep at all. Well, obviously, he’s doing great with the transition and hasn’t shown any problems of sleeping without being swaddled. Yay, Joshua!

Chad worked for most of the weekend, so the boys and I went to Mama & Papa’s house. We got Joshua’s 3-month picture taken at The Picture Place at the Brea Mall. The girl wasn’t very good and Joshua started getting cranky, so she didn’t get any great shots. There was one cute one though, so we left with just that one as our free picture. Afterwards, we went to BRU for some shopping. I got Noah some Crayola washable markers to play with – FUN! Then we rented some movies, bought some pies and relaxed at home for the rest of the night.

Ow Ow Ow. I am soooo sore from that Body Works yesterday. Oh my goodness, I can feel every step and it hurts to sit, stand...WALK!

I let Joshua cry it out this morning when he woke up at 6:15 am. I usually rush in to soothe him because I don’t want him to wake up Noah. I may have been doing myself a disservice by doing that this whole time. He cried off an on for about 20 minutes and then stopped altogether.

I’ll try to let Joshua cry for 20 minutes if he gets up in the middle of the night again, too. Chad offered to get up in the middle of the night the last couple nights, so that I could get some uninterrupted sleep. That was great! He let Joshua CIO (cry it out) for about 20 min. the first night, and then by the time he had the bottle ready, Joshua had settled. So, Chad woke him up to feed him because he didn’t want to waste the breast milk. Last night, Chad let him CIO and Joshua settled, so he didn’t feed him at all. It was the longest stretch of him not being fed – 11:00 pm to 8:30 am.

Joshua is starting to bite when he’s nursing. Not nice. I noticed he has started drooling, too...and he will fuss sometimes and not latch when switching to the other side. I wonder if he’s teething?

Daddy was making Joshua laugh so much today! Unfortunately, I was in the middle of uploading pictures, so I didn’t have a memory card in the camera to film it. I was so bummed. Joshua was even “talking”! Oh, he’s growing too fast.

Noah waved “bye” a few times today! He has done it sporadically, and not in the right context. But tonight he was doing it right!

He’s been so needy today. Cousin Natashia was watching him while we were had our church small group bible study, and he was screaming practically the whole time. Tash said that she almost started crying ‘cause she’s never seen him like that before.

I went to the gym this morning. It felt really good. It was a hard workout, and I’m already feeling it tonight.

It was Sea World day for Team Thompson! It was Joshua’s 1st visit, Noah’s 2nd. They are offering the “rest of 2008” for free when you buy a FunPass, so it’s a great deal. Lani wants to take Noah back when the Sesame Street show opens in the Spring. That was the motivator for this outing – everyone needed to get their FunPass!

It’s so fun to go to the park with a toddler. We loved showing Noah all the seals, dolphins, whales, penguins, fish...of course I could go on and on. He loved just walking everywhere. He has this cute desire to hold onto the stroller while he walks. I don’t know if it’s because he wants to be close to his brother, or if he likes the stability of having something to hold onto, or if he has a connection with it from riding it for months and months so far. Whatever the reason, it’s so cute to see.

We had two backpacks filled up with snacks and extra clothes for the boys. I thought I had everything until we went to change Noah’s diaper. There was only ONE of each size diaper for both of them! BAD MOMMY! Luckily, Noah’s diaper was only wet. So, we left him in that one and hoped we could survive the rest of the day with just one diaper each. One of these days, I’ll get it right.

We started enjoying a yummy BBQ lunch outside when Chad went to get the strollers. Then, all of a sudden, a big seagull landed on our table and ate Chad’s salmon! It happened sooo fast! (Almost as fast as when Noah grabbed the wasabe off Mama’s plate!) Joshua was sitting on my lap and I couldn’t get up fast enough. Chad got back and I had to explain what happened...I felt so bad. But he took his lunch and dessert back to the restaurant and they gave him a new meal. That was awesome.

The boys started getting fussy, so we skipped a trip to Farrell's for ice cream afterwards. We'll do that next time.

The boys and I had a full day today. Chad was working, so I took them to their first music class this morning. It was a one-time free class so that we could check out the program. It was a “family” class for infants and toddler, but Joshua couldn’t really participate because there was too much moving around. So he just watched from his car seat. The other toddlers loved looking at him and bringing him toys to play with. It was cute. I could only handle Noah anyway during the class. There was no other mom with 2 kids. I tried to keep Noah involved as much as possible, but sometimes he wanted to do his own thing. For example, sometimes he didn’t want to sit when everyone else was sitting. Surprise...not!

Chad really likes when Noah can be around other kids. He wants Noah to experience the socialization and I think that’s really important, too. It’s good for Noah to learn how to play with others and share toys and be gentle. He seemed to be having a lot of fun and took to one of the grandmas there that was watching and would go to her with a toy to play with or would want to be held by her more or sit on her lap. She was very sweet and loved giving him the attention.

The boys were ready for a nap afterwards and so was I! When we woke up, I packed up the boys and met Randee at the Irvine Spectrum. We went to Red Robin for lunch – a very good family-friendly restaurant. They have crayons, coloring placemats and balloons for the kids. I decided to take the big stroller for Noah and carry Joshua in the front carrier. So, when we sat down for lunch, I had to move Noah to the high chair and then put Joshua in the stroller. Whew...so much to juggle around with two now. ;) We had a yummy lunch and then took the boys to get their pictures taken. It was Joshua’s first formal pictures. I dressed him up in the same outfit as Noah had on at 3 months old. They got a couple of good ones before the boys got fussy. We walked out with some free “announcement” cards for Joshua. It’s all about “free” these days!

It was late and the boys needed a nap, but we were completely out of milk, so I had to stop to get more. It was my first trip to the grocery store with both boys. I put Noah in the seat of the cart and kept Joshua in his car seat and placed him sideways over the basket part. It worked pretty well, but the car seat took up a lot of space. Luckily, I only needed a few things. In fact, I could only fit the 2 gallons of milk on the bottom.
